"Akasa Kusum" Hits Sri Lankan Movie

"Akasa Kusum" will finally hit Sri Lankan cinemas on Friday 21st August, 2009 in 24 centres islandwide.The film, which has won critical acclaim the world over will also see a 9 p.m. show on weekends at the Regal cinema in Colombo. A gala premiere for "Akasa Kusum" was held last week at the Film Corporation Theatre on Bauddhaloka Mawatha, attended by a list of who's who in the Sri Lankan film and entertainment industry.Director Prasanna Vithanage said on the eve of the film's release that the vibe was positive, and that there was a "good feeling about the film" in many parts of the country. He also expressed confidence that the film would do good box office upon its release. Following is a revised list of the cinemas that will screen the film.

"Viveka was just myself. I did not have to put any extra effort to act to the character. Director Nalan Mendis let me to do the role and handled the camera according to my movements. And I didn't play for the camera, the camera was played for me," she laughs.

Chathurika has acted in nearly ten teledramas so far. She was just a schoolgirl at Musaeus College when the very first offer for a teledrama came to her. It was a secondary role in 'Bava Sayura'. And since then there has been no looking back for her.

'Rangana Vijithaya', 'Paradeesaya', 'Yaso Mandiraya', 'Pavena Sarungal', 'Ranmasu Vessa', 'Vasanthaya Evilla', 'Indrachapa', and 'Aashavari' are some of the teledramas Chathurika has starred in, that have been telecast, not-yet-telecast and still-on-shooting. Among them 'Rangana Vijithaya' (Directed by Sriyani Amarasena) was shot in Australia.

Chathurika is one of the lucky young women whose career is backed by her loving supportive parents. Her father is a radio artiste and her only sister is a permanent dancer cum TV artiste,Purnika Subhani Peiris. Hence 'art' is something that has been in her genes.

Swimming, dancing, reading books on astronomy and science fictions by Arthur C. Clarke and watching both Hollywood and Bollywood film CDs are among her hobbies.

Sri Lankan beauty Danielle Kerkoven, Miss Sri Lanka 2006, says the Indian fashion industry is full of opportunities for models as compared to its Sri Lankan counterpart, which is small and at a nascent stage.
The petite Kerkoven, who won the Miss Sri Lanka title when she was just 17, was in town for a product launch today.
“I want to make India my home as I believe there are better opportunities for a model here,” she said when asked about shifting base here. She also plans to enrol herself in a Hindi learning course.
Currently based in Delhi, Kerkoven says her mother’s influence has been her support during her formative years. “My mother Rehana was also a model and today she is one of the oldest designers in Sri Lanka. And since fashion has been all around me as a child, I took to ramp for my mother’s designs at 14.”
“I have always loved to occupy the ramp and the Miss World title gave me an unmatchable experience in my life,” says Kerkoven, who deeply bonded with Miss India Natasha Suri during the race for Miss World title.
On her slim physique, Kerkoven claims she has been naturally thin since childhood. “I hate the fact that some people take pills to be slim. Nadeeka Perera was born and grew up in Colombo. Having successfully completed a professional course in modelling she entered into the fashion world by becoming a professional model. Nadeeka always wanted to be included in the fashion world and with some encouragement she entered Capri Queen in 2004 as she had the right height.The eldest in the family, with two younger brothers, Nadeeka also has a passion for designing costume jewellery.

Her victory opened many opportunities and she was very glad that the experience she gained will help develop Sri Lanka’s fashion industry. Nadeeka said this achievement was an honour to the country, because she mastered the art of modelling within a very short period and she is ready to represent the country in any future pageants or events.

“This title would be a great opportunity for me to enter the international field to develop my modelling career after which I could make use of that knowledge to serve the country,” said a starry-eyed Nadeeka Perera.

Famous Sri Lankan model Nadeeka Samanmalee Perera was adjudged the world's best model at a modeling contest held in Spain. 23 year old Nadeeka was adjudged Miss Sri Lanka last year and represented the nation for the Miss World contest held in China.

Nadeeka enjoys social dancing, volleyball, sewing, designing and making costume jewellery, watching TV programmes on travel and tourism. Her aim in life is to encourage all young women to believe in themselves and overcome all obstacles which prevent them from fulfilling their dreams.

Popular child singer Nathasha Perera proved that she is capable not only of singing but of acting too. She won the best actress award in the open section of the State Children Drama Festival held recently.

Nathasha bagged the best actress award for her lead role as Elizabeth Allen-the naughty girl in “Danga Malla Saha Amuthu Iskole”, an adaptation from Enid Blyton’s ‘The Naughtiest Girl in the school’ (Children’s Drama Festival) staged at John De Silva Memorial theatre in September this year. She got the opportunity to act when Nalaka Swarnathilake a radio programmer realised her potential while she was presenting a children’s programme on ‘Lakhanda radio’.
Speaking to the TV Times on his first stage production which won the second place out of thirteen dramas staged at the Festival. Nalaka said “I owe my success to little Nathasha”.

Nathasha who spoke about her acting said “At first I was rather nervous as I have never acted before but gradually I got over my stage fright and really enjoyed the role of Elizabeth Allen at its first public performance on March 30 at the Tower Hall”.

Though an award winning actress now, it was her singing that first brought her to the limelight. Her “Sulangakwee Mang Enawa” in which she sings with Visharadha Edward Jayakody is in great demand and is frequently heard over the radio and TV stations.

Twelve-year old Nathasha’s ability to sing also came as a discovery. Singing at a relative’s wedding she was praised and acclaimed by many including popular composer and singer Jagath Wickremasinghe who backed her on the organ. Her paternal grandmother decided to encourage Nathasha by producing a cassette “Sulangakwee” with the help of Graction Ananda, Jagath Wickremasinghe, Samantha Liyanage and Edward Jayakody which comes out under the Torana label.

Nathasha’s cassette comes at a time when the focus is on children but the difference being that here a child has produced a cassette for children.
This grade eight student of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya who had no dreams of becoming a popular singer or an actress said, “I have no intention of continuing my career as a singer or actress,” while adding “I want to be a doctor like my Nenda who is working in England and my favourite subject is science”.

Nathasha is presently studying music under Visharadha Nanda Malani and in addition she is studying it as the aesthetic subject at her school. She is also learning to play the organ and Sitar on her own and most of her time is spent with music when she has free time from her studies.

This young girl’s talent is not limited to singing and acting. She also participated as a TV presenter in the popular children’s programmes ‘Samanala Uyana’. Nathasha says “I have many friends at school and I want to thank my teachers and our superiors at the school who helped me and encouraged me to carry on my singing and acting activities”.
